There's a Story Behind Everything.

The Velvet Pug derives its name from a four-legged lover of luxury, Henry Gates, owner Susan Gates’ pug who loved making friends at her original shop in Norris, TN. Henry passed away in 2022 and the important role of shop dog has now been bestowed upon Oliver Gates who, though a Yorkie and not a pug, instantly charms all who meet him.

Susan Gates has over two decades of experience in interior design and retail. After relocating from Dallas, TX, Susan put down roots and opened her first retail shop in historic Norris, TN. Her current retail space on the corner of Market and Main in the beautifully preserved historic downtown of Clinton, TN sits in one of the best antiquing destinations in the US.

With over 20 antiques and specialty stores, it’s no wonder Clinton made the number one spot in MarthaStewart.com’s article The Best Places to Go Antiquing Across the Country. 

Much of the inventory at The Velvet Pug was selected by Susan at the famous flea markets of Paris. The shop’s curated selection of antiques, objets d’art, lighting, textiles, home fragrances and unique gifts makes The Velvet Pug a destination unto itself. Stop by and say hello to Susan and Oliver!
